pinhole

My first pinhole camera photo. This is from the potholes in Eastern Washington. Yes- it has taken me a year to develop the negatives! Many thanks to my good friend Roberto who loaned me his pinhole camera and has taught me a great many things about life and photography.

TheAdventuresofSuperTech

Contemplating superheros of late. reminded me of this comic i made back in 1996. The Adventures of SuperTech - as i envisioned myself at work fighting crime at the microscopic level.

5.19.2007

science videos

I've discovered some very cool science animations of late. Our group is interested in wound healing and ultimately how to prevent hypertrophic scarring. This animation on wound healing can also give you an idea of the complexity of interactions that occur within the cells at a wound site and gives you a window into what i study.

4.29.2007

Tshirts

I have some T-shirts like the one above left over from my GQ show if anyone is interested.

4.28.2007

explorations

New planets and new cell signalling pathways. Orphan receptors and microdomains on the lipid bilayer. I have circles of confusion and amazement at the body's complexity and the starry skies that contain infinite possibilities.

My 'cover' shot. Endothelial cells in culture. Cool!

farm photo

Perhaps this is my favorite of all times. That's my grandmother in the black dress with her family back in 1948.

family

Been looking through old photos. So nice to have. Here is one of my grandpa, moms dad on his basketball team back in 1935-36. He's the one in the backrow, just behind the fella with the ball.

3.20.2007

Boots

I guess i have always liked cowboy boots.

2.12.2007

tiki

Aloha Everyone! We are back from our vacation and here are the highlights from our trip: humpback whale sightings, snorkeling with sea turtles, tiki god poses, maitais, sharin' a plane with Lauryn Hill, hikin' across a volcanic crater, seein' lava pour into the sea at sunset. uh - why did we have to come back?

BigIsle

nutty! we just got back from the big island of Hawaii - a much needed vacation. I saw these on the 1871 trail at the Place of Refuge.

2.03.2007

More works in progress. My stencil work on hold for the winter. Nice to have my workspace downstairs.

We had a fabulous time at the SnowBall fundraiser last night. I met Jamison Green- the highlight of the evening for me. I had donated a few pieces for the event, including his stencil portrait, which he signed for the winning bidder.

Vinculin Staining

Took this photo last week. Endothelial Cells stained with Vinculin and Phalloidin. I do love my work!

10.29.2006

all things spray worthy

First off, good news is that my show will be up at the Rose for the month of November!
Contemplations for today- I'd like to do more pieces and push myself even further with my stencil art; more layers/complexity, conceptual pieces, and larger works (lifesize). Now that it's wet outside where will i go to spray? Let's move to Hawaii!

10.10.2006

pleistocene glacial floods

Ok - one more photo from our trip to the potholes. i love that place.

9.17.2006

seeds and fluff

This is a digital cam shot from our trip to the Potholes. I'm really diggin on it..

pinhole

We went to Eastern Washington this weekend to the Potholes (one of our very favorite places). I took my friend Bobs pinhole camera with me that fits 4x5 negatives. Talk about delayed gratification in this day and age. Gotta develop the negs to see if i captured anything decent. But what a great trip, sagebrush and columnar basalt - could it get any better?

I'm realizing that most of my abstract art has a cartoony feel. which is fine - and just reflects a style that i am comfortable with.

Reminder

on transformation

"The Buddhist teachings are fabulous at simply working with what’s happening as your path of awakening, rather than treating your life experiences as some kind of deviation from what is supposed to be happening. The more difficulties you have, in fact, the greater opportunity there is to let them transform you. The difficult things provoke all your irritations and bring your habitual patterns to the surface. And that becomes the moment of truth. You have the choice to launch into the lousy habitual patterns you already have, or to stay with the rawness and discomfort of the situation and let it transform you, on the spot." Pema Chodron

7.04.2006

Stencils

My stencil project is moving along. Here are some of my latests now on the wall in our kitchen.

spray

My obsession with Spray paint started in Oaxaca Mexico. Damn its fun!

4.24.2006

cellular!

I thought i'd put up some images from my work life. This is one reason i love what i do. These are endothelial cells I stained with FITC Phalloidin which grabs the actin cytoskeleton. Pretty eh?

2.22.2006

transitions

Ok - well, i'm ending my Oaxacamusings blog and starting this SeattleZap blog, so i can continue to post thoughts, photos and art. Feels strange after a year of living abroad to transition into life back here in the states. I really miss so much about Oaxaca. But it's a trade off from limes, salt, sunny weather, and ruins to longtime friends, snowcapped peaks and the sea. It's all good i tell ya. Always an adventure.
